Announcing 2019 Language Classes for Adults

Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Or are you going on a trip where you would like to learn some key conversational skills? Come join us for an hour a week and learn a new language! We will explore a variety of relevant themes in an immersion setting and focus on comprehension and conversation.

You might be asking yourself who these classes are for, and the answer is… lots of people! Whether you’ve never been exposed to Chinese, took French a long time ago, or know some Spanish but are terrified to use it — this class is for you. It’s a beginners’ class, but it’s a beginners’ immersion class, so you’ll get lots of practice in language right off the bat. (Even if you have a little bit of background!)

Level One Classes

Level one meets once a week for 1 hour, and is for complete beginners or those who want to start from scratch. In 10 weeks, students will be introduced to the sound and feel of the language, while learning to communicate in various real life situations.

Each aspect of communication is equally emphasized in level one — listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These skills are taught totally in language, and with absolutely no boring drills!

We will send you details on where to purchase the course material after you register. The class is an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people, and to have fun practicing.

After completing level one, students will be able to:

Greet others, give personal information, ask for personal information, and describe themselves and others.
Express what they like to do in their free time, where they like to go for fun, when they like or want to do those things, and how to invite others to join.
Ask a friend what they like to do, to invite a friend to do something fun, go shopping, and order food in a culturally authentic context.

Whether you’re learning a language for business, pleasure, or enrichment, level one will provide the foundation for communicating confidently and competently in lots of important situations of daily life.

German

As one of the official languages in six different countries, German is an important language to learn if you’ll be traveling or doing business in Europe.

German can help you on your way to learning Scandinavian languages like Danish, and other Germanic languages, such as Dutch. English is a Germanic language, too, so you’ll be sure to find some similarities!

Japanese

Japanese is an influencer for global culture and a staple in the business world. It may have one of the most complicated writing systems in the world, but don’t be deterred! With lots of borrowed English words, there’s something familiar just around the corner.

One of the most commonly studied East Asian languages, Japanese is a great place to start. You’ll be joining a large community of native and foreign speakers.

Spanish

Spoken widely around the world as both a native and foreign language, Spanish is one of the most popular choices for study. It’s quickly growing in the United States, too.

There are lots of different dialects out there and the good news is that speakers from disparate countries still understand each other!

As a Romance language, Spanish can help you understand Latin roots, or give you a jump start on languages like Italian and Portuguese.

Chinese (Mandarin)

Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken dialect in China. Whether you are planning to travel to China for fun or need to visit for business, knowing Mandarin will make a huge difference in your experience and interactions!

Mandarin uses several different writing systems, including traditional and simplified characters, as well as the Latin alphabet based pinyin.

Hesitant to try Mandarin because it looks difficult? Don’t be! Writing and getting the hang of a tonal language may be a challenge, but there is a lot of overlap with English when it comes to syntax and sounds. French

A perennial favorite for culture lovers and travelers, French is a mainstay in the language learning world. As a language, French stands to teach you a lot about English, as nearly 30% of English words come from French! As a Romance language, French can help you on your way to learning other languages such as Italian and Portuguese.
